Embark on a culinary adventure with Wild Element’s Wild Foods Series, a monthly workshop at the Michigan Wildlife Conservancy’s Bengel Wildlife Center. Each session begins with an demonstration and hands-on processing of fresh wild edible plants and/or mushrooms in season for this zone of Michigan, where participants will get to know the ingredients and the habitats in which they are found. Following the ingredient exploration, the workshop will delve into various methods of preparing and preserving the gathered foods, including cooking, dehydrating, pickling, fermenting, and canning. Each month focuses on a different preservation technique, offering a comprehensive exploration of foraged ingredients from nature to table.

This month we have a BONUS workshop in addition to the regularly scheduled monthly series — specially created for spruce tip season! Spruce tips are the new branch and needle growth that sprouts in the spring. We will explore these soft new growth needles (which are edible!) and discuss types of Michigan spruce, how to harvest spruce tips sustainably, and taste some spruce tip syrup.

You are invited to join this journey from forage to tasting, gaining hands-on experience and knowledge about the rich array of wild foods available in Michigan. Whether you’re a seasoned forager or new to the practice, this series provides a unique opportunity to connect with the environment and learn sustainable ways to enjoy nature’s bounty.

What to Bring:

  • Weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes, if desired

The Bengel Wildlife Pub will be open for additional food and beverages.
