Join Wild Element for an engaging Wild Medicinals Foraging Walk at Michigan Wildlife Conservancy’s Bengel Wildlife Center. This 2.5-hour guided hike will cover approximately 1.5 miles of diverse trails, focusing on identifying and sustainably harvesting Michigan’s native edible plants, including native fruits and edible leaves.

Did you know you could load your medicine cabinet from the woods?

And plants harvested from our local wild spaces often have less chemicals, and increased nutritional/medicinal value than store-bought varieties. Come join us and learn to identify plants useful in home remedies, and harvest some to take home!

Event Highlights:

  • Plant Identification: Learn to recognize a variety of edible wild plants such as wild raspberry, a sweet and tart trail snack that rarely make it home, and edible foliage that can add flavor and fiber to your recipes.

  • Invasive Species Stewardship: Discover how to identify and manage invasive plants like autumn olive, which threatens local ecosystems. Gain hands-on experience in mitigating the spread of this invasive species and learn how it can be utilized as a food source.

  • Sustainable Foraging Practices: Understand ethical harvesting techniques to ensure ecological balance and promote the health of native plant populations.

  • Medicinal Insights: Discuss methods for cleaning, preserving, and preparing your foraged finds, incorporating wild remedies into your routine.

What to Bring:

  • Weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes

  • Water bottle

The Wildlife Pub will be open before and after the walk for food and beverages.

Important Information: Please dress appropriately for outdoor hiking and be prepared for varying weather conditions.
