Join Wild Element for our June Wildcrafting Wednesday meetup at the Michigan Wildlife Conservancy’s Bengel Wildlife Center. This month, we’re delving into the age-old skill of crafting natural cordage—transforming plant fibers into strong, functional rope and twine.
Cordage has been an essential tool throughout human history, used for shelter-building, tool-making, and more. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to identify, harvest, and process local plants like milkweed, dogbane, and nettles to create durable cordage.
What to Expect:
Guided instruction on selecting and preparing plant fibers suitable for cordage.
Hands-on experience in twisting fibers into strong, two-ply cordage.
Discussion on the various applications of natural cordage, from survival situations to crafting unique jewelry.
What to Bring:
Weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear.
Notebook and pen for taking notes.
This workshop is suitable for all skill levels and is a great opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals interested in sustainable living and nature-based crafts. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Spaces are limited, so reserve your spot today! We look forward to crafting with you.
